Learn more about what happens during a routine eye exam below!

What Takes Place During a Routine Eye Exam?

The most important thing to remember during your routine eye exam is that you are going to be made as comfortable as possible. You can sit back and relax as the eye doctor does his or her job, checking your eyes. There are several steps involved during a routine eye exam. These include:

  • The eye doctor is going to check your visual acuity, making sure your prescription does not need to be updated (or that you do not need glasses or contacts if you do not have them currently).
  • Then, the eye doctor is going to check your visual fields to make sure you can see out of all portions of your eyes.
  • The optometrist will also check the pressure behind your eyes to make sure you do not have glaucoma.
  • Finally, the eye doctor will also dilate your eyes to get a closer look at your optic nerves and blood vessels.

The eye doctor will let you know what is happening as the exam moves forward.

Why Is a Regular Eye Checkup Important?

It is critical for you to have a regular eye exam in Ohio at least once per year. Even if you feel like your eyes are fine, you still need to see an eye doctor to make sure there is nothing lurking beneath the surface that you may have overlooked. A few reasons why regular eye exams are important include:

  • If you already wear glasses or contacts, you need to make sure your prescription does not need to be updated. That way, you can still see clearly.
  • For children, a regular eye exam is important because it allows the eye doctor to make sure their eyes are developing appropriately.
  • Even if you feel like you are fine, there could be an issue with your eyes that is not yet causing symptoms. A regular eye exam is important for detecting these problems before they get out of hand.

For all of these reasons, make sure you get your eyes checked by a qualified optometrist at least once per year.
